Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP's Fabio Quartararo and Álex Rins had some ups and downs on the opening day of the Grand Prix of Indonesia. While the teammates showed good pace around the Mandalika International Circuit, it also proved a worthy opponent as both riders suffered crashes in the Friday afternoon session. Quartararo rallied to finish the Practice in 7th, booking a direct ticket for Q2, while Rins ended the session in P11, missing out on the top 10 by just 0.090s.

Quartararo had finished FP1 in eighth place, giving him a confidence boost ahead of the afternoon shoot-out. The Frenchman put in his first bid for a direct place in Q2 early on in the session and temporarily held third before settling in fifth. However, his progress in the session was temporarily halted by a fast crash in Turn 8. Though he didn't sustain any major injuries, Quartararo was cautious in getting back onto his feet. However, he showed his exceptional professionalism by still improving on his time. His 1'29.558s best effort, set on lap 17/21, earned him seventh place in the timesheets, 0.833s from first, and a place in Q2.

Rins had a strong start to the Indonesian GP weekend and wrapped up FP1 in an encouraging eleventh place. The Spaniard was determined to keep the positive momentum going in the afternoon. The number 42 posted a 1'29.876s best time on lap 21/25, during the first time attack, which saw him in temporary fifth place before he was pushed down to P9. Keen to put in another effort the Spaniard pushed hard in the final stages but suffered a crash in Turn 17. It had him finish the day in 11th place, 1.151s off today's fastest time. He will take part in tomorrow's Q1 session.

The Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team will be back in action tomorrow for the Saturday MotoGP sessions: FP2 will be held from 10:10-10:40 (GMT+8), followed by the qualifying sessions from 10:50-11:30, and the 13-lap Sprint that starts at 15:00.

"I feel a bit sore on the left side. The crash was fast, but it was not a big one. It was just how I entered into the gravel – that was the worst part. Luckily nothing is broken, just a muscle injury in the thumb, so we were able to go back on the bike. But tomorrow I will wake up a bit sore. After this kind of crash when you need to reset, doing two time attacks is not the best way to get back on the bike, but I actually felt pretty good. I feel quite okay on the bike. Let's see what we can do tomorrow. My aim is to be on the first three rows."

"This one hurts because I had the potential. We started in a really good way in the morning, and also in the afternoon – many consecutive laps, the pace was not bad for us. Let's see what we can do tomorrow. For sure, we have the potential to go through to Q2, but there are some super-fast rivals in Q1 – but we will try, so why not? You have to be brave at this track and carry a lot of speed. I like fast tracks like this one."
